Cardboard Constructions, Commence!

Give a child a cardboard box and it might become a car.

Add another box and it becomes a castle.

Provide enough cardboard, tools and imaginative freedom, and there is really no telling where the construction will end.

Cirque Um Navigate’s Cardboard Constructors Workshop invites children to design, cut, connect and build using one of the most wonderfully versatile materials available.

Projects can be tiny and intricate or large enough to require an entire construction crew.

From Cardboard to Almost Anything

Participants begin with sheets, boxes and pieces of cardboard before deciding what they want to create.

They might build:

Monsters and imaginary creatures
Cars, trucks and curious vehicles
Castles, forts and towers
Robots and machines
Costumes and wearable constructions
Houses and miniature worlds
Something enormous made by the whole group

There is no kit and no single correct result.

Children can follow one of our building challenges, develop their own design or join forces with others to create something much larger than any one participant could manage alone.

Real Tools for Serious Builders

Cardboard is easy to recognise, but it becomes far more exciting when children discover how it can be properly constructed.

With guidance from our facilitator, participants learn age-appropriate techniques for shaping and connecting cardboard.

Depending on the group and workshop format, this may include using purpose-selected tools to cut, saw, drill and bolt pieces together.

The tools make the experience feel substantial. Children are not merely decorating a box—they are learning how an idea becomes a structure.

All tool use is introduced and managed according to the participants’ ages, abilities and the workshop environment.

Design. Test. Rebuild.

Cardboard construction is full of useful questions.

Will the tower stand?

Can the wheels turn?

Is the monster’s head too large for its body?

Does it require another six legs?

Participants draw, build and test their ideas before adjusting anything that doesn’t work as expected.

The workshop encourages:

Cooperation and communication
Persistence through trial and error
An understanding that additional cardboard can solve many problems

A collapsed structure is not the end of the project.

It is information for the next version.

Participants can create their own smaller projects, working through an idea from beginning to completion.

Individual builds allow children to make personal design decisions, progress at their own pace and take pride in something they have constructed themselves.

Where practical, smaller creations can travel home with their builders.

Vacation Care, OOSH & Holiday Programs

Cardboard Constructors is ideal for vacation care, OOSH and club holiday programs because it combines imaginative play with a substantial hands-on project.

Children can work independently or collaborate, allowing different personalities and confidence levels to participate comfortably.

It is active without being a sporting activity, creative without requiring traditional artistic skill and structured without dictating what every child must make.

Schools & Creative Learning

The workshop also works beautifully for school groups exploring design, drama, visual arts, construction or collaborative problem-solving.

Activities can be shaped around a theme, story or shared challenge. Tell us what your group is exploring and we’ll discuss what might be possible in cardboard.
